About IUU-AA

Protecting Our Oceans, Defending Marine Life, Holding Nations Accountable

What is The IUU-AA?

The Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing Action Alliance (IUU-AA) is a coalition of public and private actors united in the fight against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. Established at the United Nations Ocean Conference in June 2022 by the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada, alongside non-state partners, the alliance was created to strengthen global efforts to combat IUU fishing. The IUU-AA is composed of Members (States) that drive government-led initiatives and Supporters (Non-Governmental Organizations) that provide expertise and resources to support these efforts. Since its launch, the alliance has grown to include 12 Member States and 12 Supporters who work to deliver the outcomes of The Pledge, reflecting a robust international commitment to addressing this critical issue and protecting the world’s fisheries.

Why Do we need the IUU-AA?

IUU fishing poses a serious threat to ocean ecosystems, coastal communities, and global food security. By undermining sustainable fisheries management and distorting trade, IIU fishing disrupts economies and endangers marine biodiversity. Moreover, it is often linked to broader maritime security challenges, including forced labor, illicit trade, and organized crime. While strong international rules and agreements exist—supported by bodies like Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs)—these frameworks are not always effectively enforced at the national level. The IUU-AA plays a critical role in ensuring that commitments to combat IUU fishing are translated into meaningful national enforcement actions. By driving collaboration between governments and non-state partners, the IUU-AA works to strengthen monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS), enhance traceability in supply chains, and promote international cooperation. Without decisive action, IUU fishing will continue to threaten marine resources and global stability, making the work of the IUU-AA more crucial than ever.
